it's not how big your collection is....it's how you use it!

    mine:

    '87 FLATIRON A5 JR
'77 EPIPHONE BG440 two pt oval hole
late '50's Kay ac elec (w stock lipstick tube p/u)
late '60's Sekova A style beater (my first mando from back in the '70's while in HS)
old no name bowlback rescued from an antique shop in Middletown NY

while i'll always covet more mandos (and gtrs, and basses, and dobros, aaaaand.....) three that i'd really like to add to the stable would be a '20's Gibson oval hole, a mandola, and a greek bouzouki (tuned in standard greek zouk tuning CFAD).

with every new purchase my wife will ask...." so, NOW you're set? right? " it's become a running joke around here.
    just groove, baby!

I still need your string labels!

my bad...i neglected to list my "mondo". a few yrs ago i picked up an old hollowbody thinline HONDO (think el-cheapo ES-330) at a garage sale. i cut a new nut, adapted a bridge and tailpiece for it and poof....HONDO became MONDO. now has octave mandolin tuning w unisons on the E and A and octave pairs on the D and G strings.

i even changed that "H" to an "M" on the headstock! funny, it really stunk as a gtr but everyone that's heard or played it flips over it in it's current incarnation.

    $15 VERY well spent!

These are tools for a pro, so they should have as many or as few as they feel they need to make their music. And if they get to a place where they really make some serious coin, then they should invest in some of the great ones, to preserve their influence and legacy in the music (and thereby not sit in a vault of some collector).

Me, I would someday like to have just one good one!

I think I collect mandolins because I not only love them but think I will play better the more I have.......not so, I am terrible. But I have
Gibson F5L, Bozeman made, Carlson signed
Weber Yellowstone F, red spruce top, one piece back
Flatiron A, Bozeman made, Weber signed
Washburn two point, Jethro Burns model (actually sounds good)
    Old bowl shapped ??
    Epiphone two point

The top four are my favorites and every week I am choosing just one and getting rid of the rest, but next week I like another one best. I traded my D41 Martin for the Weber. I think I have Mando fever.....maybe if I take two Aspirins I can get over this.

My wife has been complaining for years that i have too many instruments (in her parlance, "toys"), and that's just the guitars. i've got my original Eko Ranger-12, a Martin D-35, and a Taylor CE-414. i know she was talking to one of her sisters because when she came up a couple of years ago she asked the question, phrased just like my spousal-unit; "Why own so many instruments?"
i sat down with her and played the same piece on all 3 and she immediately understood that they all have unique sounds.
Do i still "duke it out" with my spousal-unit? Yep. Her sister? Nawp.

    Let's see; if i have 8 strings on 4 mandos; that's 36, plus 8 for the mandocello; that's 44, plus 6 strings on 2 guitars; that's 12 plus 44; that's 56. String-wise i've got her beat, number-wise she's in the lead.

While I don't have serious MAS, I would still like to add a Commodium, Mandola, Mandocello, and an e-mando to the herd. The funny thing is I'm not a particularly accomplished player. I'm balancing these desires with camera gear, my other passion.

Hi Connor; I like the way you think! I'm a fan of 2-Point mandolins. Hence, if I had my druthers, here are 6 of those I'd love to own!

Only one, if it makes you happy. I got two and both of them puts a grin on my face, but I could do with just one. Not a collector of musical instruments. I did delve into collecting Case XX pocket knives a few years, but nothing big.

I go to these little concerts at a music store that attracts some of the best musicians to come and play to an audience of maybe 30. Almost everyone plays that comes to the shows. One performer was talking about the guitars that he owns and someone from the audience stated that he had only one. Most of the others in the room turned to the speaker and simultaneously said "Really!?"

FYI, some months ago Andy Statman played a house concert near hear and I got to talk with him a bit after the show. He's playing a Kimble F model now and related that he can only play one instrument at a time, because he really has to get to know its precise response. Therefore his famous old Gibson A never comes out of the case anymore. . . . just sayin'.

I have a nice A model with F holes, a nice A model with an oval hole, and someday I'd like to get an F, but honestly, if you play more than one type of instrument (say, guitar and mando) or have a big collection of guitars or mandos, how many can you really get to know?

I had a beautiful Poe Scout made to back up my 2009 Phoenix Bluegrass but ended up selling it to a fine gentleman from San Francisco.

I play my Phoenix every day now and love it so much that my first mandolin has a very good chance of being my last as well.

Minimally, kidding aside, I’d say 2.

If you’re in the habit of playing one (of any instrument) regularly, you need a backup for those cases where the one needs repairs taking more than a day or two.
