Mike, do you mind sharing what type of varnish you use? Do you make your own or do you use one of the common premixed varnishes?

OK. I'd say that is a waterborne, long oil, urethane resin varnish. (An oil varnish as I would understand it.)

Sorry, but talk of sullying an instrument's historic significance is irrelevant when the instrument comes already scraped back to the wood. The task then becomes refinishing it in a tasteful way that meets with the approval of the new owner - the only person who matters in this equation.
