    There is no finish yet. Those are just pictures after scraping the stain off the binding last night. It "will have" a Spirit Varnish finish with a French Polish top coat.

    Mike, do you mind sharing what type of varnish you use? Do you make your own or do you use one of the common premixed varnishes?

    I do not mix my own. I have been using the KTM Spar Varnish with very good results for awhile now. It's been suggested to me to also start trying the Epifanes Spar Varnish.

    OK. I'd say that is a waterborne, long oil, urethane resin varnish. (An oil varnish as I would understand it.)

    Sorry, but talk of sullying an instrument's historic significance is irrelevant when the instrument comes already scraped back to the wood. The task then becomes refinishing it in a tasteful way that meets with the approval of the new owner - the only person who matters in this equation.

    Well done for giving it to Mike, and great job Mike Black.
