Smile I said Dog Songs, not Dawg Songs!

The bluegrass band I'm in, Random Creek, has been volunteered to play for a fund raiser for the ASPCA. We've been trying to think of some dog songs and come up with a few like Patti Page's "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window", Homer & Jethro's "How Much Is That Hound Dog in the Winder", "There's a Rabbit in a Log and I Ain't Got My Dog", and "Blue Ridge Mountain Blues". But now we're stumped.

"Dog" is too short to search on the Cafe, so I'm relying on you fine ladies and gentlemen to put your heads together to think of some other dog songs. It merely has to mention dog, singular or plural; it does not have to be in the title.

Good luck, have some fun, and thanks for your assistance.

On Grisman's CD for kids he had a song with the line, "there ain't no bugs on me, there ain't no bugs on me, ther might be bugs on some of you mugs, but there ain't no bugs on me." Kinda fits the theme I think. :-)

Maybe "Old Rattler" by Grandpa Jones (good dog song), "Dog House Blues" by Bill Monroe, or "Old Dog Blue" (very good dog song).

Apparently the "Old Dog Blue" I'm thinking of is actually called "Old Dog Blues" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2twf...eature=related

From google i found, I Want a Dog which would be good for a ASPCA fund raiser.

You could probably Bluegrass it, slowly.

Bill Monroe et al... "Little Joe":

    ...
Keep Tag, mother, my little dog
I know that he'll mourn for me too
Keep him though blind and older he grows
To sleep in the whole summer through

Show him my coat, mother, so he may know
That his master then will be dead
Speak to him kindly and often of Joe
And pat him on his brown shaggy head
    ...

    Full lyrics are here: http://www.bluegrasslyrics.com/node/490

I applied the search function on this site and came up with quite some hits (hits too):

    Chattanooga Dog
    Dog Bite Your Hide
    Groundhog
Little Old Log Cabin In The Lane
    Old Rattler
    Tennessee Hound Dog
    Walking The Dog
I´m On My Way Back To The Old Home

    Theme gigs are fun. Enjoy

"You Ain't Nothing But A Hound Dog" could be grassed up pretty easily.

I knew you people would break the mental logjam. Thanks for the rapid, overnight replies. Those are some great ideas.

What will the daytime crew think of while I'm at work? Bet its good.

I know you said dogs, but how about cats for your ASPCA gig? (BTW - kudos for your volunteer status.)

There was also a sequel to "Old Rattler" called "Old Rattler's Son".

My favorite has always been "Old Blue," which I learned from The Byrds. I am of course familiar with "Hound Dog" and "Salty Dog," performed them countless times in bands and at picking parties and campfires, but neither of them is about a dog. (What the hell IS a salty dog anyway? Wiki says a soft drink but offers no proof of this assertion. I still think it is something a bit more naughty.) The seasonal Cajun/country/bluegrass band performs the classic "Lacassine Special," Jay Ungars version with words added, known as "Low Down Dirty Dog" - again, this is a figurative dog. I have a feeling this type of song is going to show up here more often than songs about actual dogs. I hope to be proven wrong about this.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

Take a listen to the Carter Family song "Buddies in the Saddle." I've always thought this was more about a dog than another cowboy. I think it would work for you.

Brian, it probably won't fit with your theme but a great humorous "Dog" song is "I Shot Your Dog" by Fred Eaglesmith.

And this was one of the few that Charles Sawtelle would sing.

Another is Old Dogs & Children & Watermelon Wine. And the New England bluegrass band Old Dog (Phil Rosenthal, Stockwell brothers) sang the tune Old Dog, maybe written by them.
