He was here in Albany, NY, with a dude named Woody Pines, in February... and he was awesome. I wasn't expecting him to be there, just went out to see Woody, who is also great... Then this guys started playing the mandolin, and, wow...

He's got that really loose right hand stroke. Gets good tone.

f5loar...Absolutely!...That right hand is amazing. It looks like it just hovers above the strings, with the tone magically rolling out!

I happened to attend the first Monroe style mando camp and David was there. He taught a session that I will never forget -- it was entitled "How to get a fiddle sound out of a mandolin". The points you made about his ability to pick was most evident that morning to me -- like fluid drive.

And I know its just an opinion but for my money he is one of the very best players out there now -- he essentially "plays to the level of competition" -- so he isn't always about full on "tour de force" exibitions but rather focuses on appropriate tasteful passages that in many ways are more satisfying then some finger tangling barrage of notes. But if he wants he can do that too.

Anyway, just an opinion but I think he is way under the radar considering his ability. And if you want "traditional bluegrass" from him just listen to his stuff when he was the mandolin in Karl Shiflett's band.

I saw David at MerleFest where he was playing with the Hartford String Band. He is playing with Todd Grebe & Cold Country, http://www.toddgrebeandcoldcountry.com/index.html . They have a cd out and leave to play in AK in a week or so.

Thought this as good a place to share as any. Info about a new project from David Long, one of our favorite traditionalist styled mandolinists. You can get in on supporting David through the GoFundMe project we're linking to here.
