Default Jim Richter Rock & Blues Camp: A Mandolin Camp for the Rest of Us

Just a reminder that my rock and blues oriented mandolin camp is a little more than a month away. The day of the workshop is 7/23, but there will be a concert on 7/21, multiple jamming opportunities, etc. through the course of 2 and 1/2 days. The camp is filling up, but there are still some vacancies. As a note, you are welcome to just attend the workshop, if you can't do the rest of the camp. Also, the concert on 7/21 is a free concert here in Bloomington (sponsored by Parks and Rec), so feel free to come out just to the concert.

As I'm also a long time mental health worker and a graduate student in counseling, I do bring a unique approach to my educational style, as I'm as interested in the development of self-efficacy and self-concept, as much as a person's technique and playing ability. This camp, though geared toward the niche of rock and blues mandolin, is really a camp for anyone trying to overcome the hurdle of lack of self-appreciation of playing ability (for example, the person who's been playing for 5 years and still looks at him/herself as a beginner).

For more info, you can PM me, visit my website at jimrichter.com, or view my facebook event page at: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?ei...952127&pending.

I'll be arriving for the concert Thursday evening and staying throughout.
I'd love to get together with other attendees on Friday for some jamming.

Sounds wonderful! I wish it were here in Japan. I'm very interested in blues mandolin, and I've watched a number of your videos. Your approach sounds like it will have very positive results! Wishing the camp and all goes well!!

Put me in this category. Hopefully next year? In the meantime Jim continues to remain a major inspiration to my mandolin playing.

For those attending - I look forward to meeting you all next month!
In the meantime, I thought it might be a good idea for us to create an informal list of tunes lined-up for the jam sessions. I'm thinking songs most folks will know, that aren't hard to follow, and that will promote singing and jamming. I'll suggest these four songs:
    Knockin' on Heaven's Door (G,D,Am/G,D,C)
    That's Alright Mama (A,A7,D,E7,A)
House of the Rising Sun (Am,C,D,F,Am,C,E,E)
    Country Honk (G,C,G,A7,D,G,C,G,D7,G)
Please feel free to add your suggestions here, so we'll all have the opportunity to work on these songs prior to the Camp.

    Hi all

This is a reminder that my mandolin camp is coming up in a couple weeks. Still a few spots left for those interested. Turnout has been great with representatives from Arkansas, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Canada in attendance.

I am looking forward to this as well. I will admit, I am pretty nervous and not confident in my playing at all. Guess I will face my fear.

I had been thinking about this as well but I have to admit, I'm pretty new at mandolin. I'm a songwriter mostly and use various instruments to write on. So, I don't know anyone elses music on mandolin, though I could do a fair job on guitar. :-) I'm not sure I want to humiliate myself quite yet. It does look like fun though and maybe I could learn a lot too. hmmmm.... still thinkin.

    Hi all

This is not a camp to fear--it's one to celebrate. I refuse to buy into the beginner/intermediate/experienced categorization and mindset. I see each person as an artist in bloom. Not everyone has to be a monster technician to be an excellent musician. This camp is about learning what you already have and becoming confident with it. A lot of what I do on mandolin (as far as rock and blues stuff) comes from my experience as an electric guitarist. Part of this discussion is demystifying your knowledge of music on another instrument by learning how to apply it to the instrument you're learning. This is not a camp for the experienced. This is a camp for everyone, regardless of skill level. I promise that it'll be a new way of looking at your relationship to your instrument (be that the mandolin or something else).

    Hi dwilken:

Here is the information page for the Camp.

Yes, all of the Camp activities are in Bloomington, IN. A Jim Richter/Gordon Bonham concert on Thursday evening at the Third St. Park in Bloomington is kind of an informal kick-off event. All of the other Camp activities (private lessons, jams, sessions) will take place at the Grant Street Inn in downtown Bloomington.

There are two of us from northern Ohio attending the Camp (Londy & I). I've only been playing for a little over a year and still consider myself a novice...In my opinion, you should not let your level of experience keep you from joining us. (see Jim's fine post above).

You are right! There is a Magic Pull. I am in Northern Ohio as well and I will be going. You need to be there with us, its going to be a blast. Maybe you can jam with me and Ed Goist, he's in Ohio as well. See, the pull is real!

While working with clients who apologize for their lack of skills, I have a saying I use a lot. "We're all still learning". I think it applies in most of my life. I think Jim "Godfather" Richter is going to help us all improve and feel better about our mandolins. I hoping to make some lasting connections and hopefully a "sponsor" to keep me on the path to mando enlightenment.

Oh yeah... I've yet to see a certain word mentioned here so I'll start - bluegrass.

Thanks very much to Jim and to all of the other attendees!
It was great meeting you all, and spending so much time together jamming throughout the weekend.
I look forward to continuing the work we started on those arrangements of Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown), Pride (In the Name of Love), Almost Cut My Hair, and Country Honk!
Hoping we can stay in touch, and continue to share our mandolin Blues-ness and Rock-ness!

Hi Rene; Courtesy of Camp attendee Mark Woodland, here is a gallery of some pics and one video taken throughout the weekend.
On the video, I am honored to report that Jim is playing my JBovier EMC-4 electric mandolin while the rest of us are laying down a rhythm.
