For ones like this, it looks like he cast a plaster master (most likely still from a wax original) for making the production mold. This would enable him to make wax duplicates at will so he could cast multiples in bronze if needed.
From the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum: I'd guess this is the "plaster master"?

(Just now realized that JB posted this picture in post #4 of this thread - sorry for the redundancy)

Can't help thinking Baboons With Mandolins would be a great name for a band.

In this context, the correct term is "primatedolin". The speciesism around here is deplorable!

What hath God - or rather, Fredericks - wrought!

Why not just go right to it - Baboondolins. The logo is already made. What a great T-shirt design!

You are quite right, Schlegel. I recalled having been told my simplified version of the cire perdue process back in college - we made something in cast aluminum using a styrofoam model. That, of course, has air a-plenty and would not incur the expansion problem you mentioned. The wiki describes a 12-step process (and no, the first step is NOT admitting you have a problem) that is quite complicated and ingenious.

Well, I like it. But I've always gone in for the more iconolast approaches to, ahem, bluegrass. Not newgrass, but more like Eugene Chadbourne or TMBG..

That ornament would look great festooning our tree...my wife and I have collected a wide assortment of holiday oddities. (I notice bonzo's package has been "ecumenicalized" for the xmas version)

And this is just cool...and would match some of the stuff we have around here...
