    Default John Reischman CD

I am about to purchase my first JR & the jaybirds cd. I have heard so many good things about the Jaybirds and John's playing. Which of his CD's would you recommend?
    Thanks!

Here's my caveat. I have most of them & like them all....but my very favorites.....(for mandolin playing) "North of The Border" & for jazzy mandolin playing "Still Inside" when he was playing with Tony Rice. For ensemble playing with the Jaybirds (& others) "Up in the Woods." I have seen him live through all the CDs since 1999 and these are still my favorites....let's hear from some other folks...

Jaybirds albums are pretty consistent. But if you don't have any of Reischman's stuff, I'd say get "Up In The Woods". It's all instrumental, all original and an absolute masterpiece. One of the finest bluegrass mandolin albums of all time.

All the aforementioned are wonderful and must have's. But I discovered JR when he was in the Good Ol' Persons back in the 80's, and those are some of my favs. Some of JR's classics like, Hamsters in the Cupboard , La Arboleda and Itzbin Reel are on those old albums. I probably misspelled them, but I'm too lazy to look for those cd's.

I only have Field Guide and Bumpy Road. Field Guide is (to me) more traditional bluegrass while Bumpy Road is more jazz oriented. Both however feature fantastic mando content.

I have had both of the cds w. John Miller: Bumpy Road and The Singing Moon. In particular, great tunes and interplay between guitar
and mandolin on "The Singing Moon!"

I've got them all ,or rather will have, when "Vintage & Unique" & "Stellar Jays" are delivered to my home this week. I'd recommend "North of the border" & "Up in the woods" as a 'first 2',just for John Reischman's playing style. "North of the border" has him playing tunes in different genres - Jazz / Latin/ Bluegrass & it highlights his awesome talent perfectly - most definitely my main man on mandolin,

Yep, can't miss with all that have been mentioned. NOTB gets regular play as do Still Inside and Backwaters. Speaking of that era of John, he composed a waltz that he used to do with the TRU. It's the first cut on that 1982 McCabe's show, in D chord. Does anyone know the name of that number. Been messing with it (lovely 9 voicings) and would like to know what it's called.

They're all good, but Up in the Woods is, for me, a true desert island record.

I enjoy Reischman's picking with the Jaybirds but you really ought to get his all instrumental CDs to really hear his playing. I'll second all the positive words on his North of the Border CD but I think the "Singing Moon" CD with John Miller is some of the finest mandolin picking I've heard. Also "Travellers" CD he did with Butch Baldassari and Robin Bullock has been in regular rotation on my CD player for probably 5 years now. I believe it's currently out of print but you may be able to get a copy on Butch's website: http://www.soundartrecordings.com/allproducts.shtml

"Up in the Woods" from me too. Cover also has one of the best photos of his famous beard.

So many folks have mentioned "Singing Moon" & "Travellers" that i'll buy those as soon as i have a bit of spare cash.I'd never heard of Robin Bullock until recently, when i found a YouTube clip of him along with several other Mandolin players, playing 'Mississippi Sawyer'.
A CD with Reischman / Baldassari & Bullock HAS to be something special,

Went through my (horrific) CD pile last night and found an old show of JR and John Miller duo from a Japanese bg festival, year 2000. They play a variety of tunes - grass, choro and jazz. One tune they did was an original JM tune called, I think Ode To Kenny (or something), written for the bop trumpet player Kenny Dorham. I mean, a mandolin solo for Kenny Dorham, how sick is that (in a good way, of course )

    JR has the wide stance

As far as I know Travellers is still in print...in any event, it's still available from SoundArt Recordings at the link Gary provides, as well as from CDBaby and Amazon.

Glad you enjoyed the video, Ivan!

    Oui, Philippe.

The other CD of that date is John playing mandolin with a Japanese band. Mostly standard tunes - Wheel Hoss, fiddle tunes, etc. The band obviously loved the man, as he got many solos during the set.

TR says "a Waltz written by the mandolin player..."
But you can find the tune in NOTB. It's called "BROOKS".

I just knew that if anyone knew, it would be you, my friend. Milles mercis.

This was music from a different time, for sure - new, exciting, different. 30 years ago now, my my.
