    Question Mandolin workshop "Dream Team"?

If you were going to spend a week studying a variety of styles (bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, swing, jazz, Choro, other world music, etc.) from a handful of the world's top mandolin players, who would you like to see on the staff?

Well, I don't think that being a great mandolin player "automatically" makes you a great teacher. Mickey Mantle always wanted to be a manager but he was told that he had natural talent/instincts and couldn't relate to players. Some great managers were lousy players such as Walt Alston or Tommy Lasorda. However, if I could spend a week with a mandolin player/teacher, it would have to be Pete Martin. I suppose it really depends on the level of playing skill that one has achieved.

Not wishing to offend any players left out - in a Mandolin starved UK, any dozen of them that you'd care to put together (please !)

I have gotten the most out of classes from the following teachers: Don Stiernberg, John Reischman, Alan Bibey, Robin Bullock, Sharon Gilchrist, John Moore, Andrew Collins, and Carlo Aonzo. In a master class, David Harvey (gently) noted flaws in my playing and approach to soloing that were so on point and illuminating that I remind myself of his advice at every practice.

Although I have never had the privilege, I would actively seek out instruction from John McGann, Don Julin, Adam Steffey, and Mike Compton, based on what I have heard and read.

I'd like to second (or third?) the nominations of Robin Bullock and Mike Compton, and add Ashley Broder, K.C. Groves, Steve James, Caleb Klauder and Peter Oshtrushko (sp?). I have mixed emotions if you're recruiting for Swannanoa. This year's Old Time week was the third "Once in a lifetime" opportunity that I sold to my wife to let me go. Any more and I'll have to become one of my cats!

P.S. I got as much out of Paul Kovac's (another shout-out) hour-long potluck ("It's all about the Two and the Four") than I did from my full week instructors.

P.P.S. I also forgot Joe Walsh. One of my first introductions to mandolin was hearing his clip "Whiskey Before Breakfast" here on the cafe MP3 page. I was hooked!

Wow we have so many to choose from !!

I would say that my buddy David Harvey would be tops on the list, great player and great teacher regardless of the level of player you are. Beyond that Steffey, Bibey, Benson, and a long shot would be Doyle Lawson. Also Carlo Aonzo would be a choice for a style that I never play. I met him at the Kaufmann camp about 10 years ago and what a neat guy and a great player

I would have to include Radim Zenkle, a great player and a methodical instruct.

I think a camp hosted by Scott would a blast, with instructors who are mandolincafe forum regulars/recording artists, instructors, authors, instructional web site hosts, youtube stars, etc.: Niles, Kevin Mcleod, Dagger, John McGann, DanB, Jim Richter, Ted, etc.
