No, it WAS an obelisk found on a lunar excavation...but it IS what it is (a small guitar-like thingy, of course, as everyone knows -- especially Ted who no doubt would have indicated such in his pie-chart graph had he intended for a true representation rather than frivolous humor...because the mandolin is funny that way)

BTW, not surprised it came from Ted's site. The high percentage reported of people who think it is a jazz instrument is a giveaway.

Oh, and if this were a survey conducted in France, there would be enough kitchen utensil responses to show up, and probably appear as a good-sized slice of the pie.

With regards to slicing potatoes, I've had some success using the E courses. Great for different cheeses, as well.

I've had no luck creating any tunes, though, mostly just frustrated notes and child-frightening twangs.

Of course, it depends on whether you do this survey with just the word "mandolin" or by showing photo of an actual mandolin and asking, "What is this?" This survey obviously just used the word because I don't see the options: "small guitar" or "banjo."
