Thread: Kat Eyz capo

    Default Kat Eyz capo

If you own a Kat Eyz capo, please let me know whether you like and how it stacks up against your other capos. (http://www.janetdavismusic.com/KATG.html).

I'm also curious if anyone has a preference for brass over steel, and if so why? (Other than saving $40.)

    Thanks, Mark

Seems like overkill for a mandolin. Is that what you are using it for?

So we've now achieved the $100 capo, to go with our $35 picks and our $75 straps?

For mandolin... trigger capos work just fine. I use one of these to capo into E from D all the time when blues players show up at the jam and I get bored playing in closed positions:

For the few times I use a capo, the Shubb Lite banjo capo is my choice. Made of aluminum and so light that it feels like plastic. I just noticed that it now comes in multiple COLOR choices.

Sorry, but there's just nothing in my book to justify $99 for something that simple. I'm sure it works really well, but no thanks.

I use capos on mandolins and make no apologies for it. With the music I play, it's necessary, period. I have Shubbs and Khysers and they are OK. My favorite is an Elliott that is custom made for my Rigel. It was expensive, but I've never regretted getting it.

John, I too use capos when neccessary. I use the Planets Waves NS Steinberger. I've cut about a 3/8" off of it to remove the sticky out part. I like it alot.

    I'm with Phil.

Mostly use it when changing strings.

I wonder why some people are so against the use of capos. I don't own one and have never used one, but if other people find a use for a capo and it helps them play in certain situations, more power to them.

And of the ones linked to in this thread, the Shubb looks like a good quality item at a reasonable price.

I use capos all the time. I've become a big fan of the Planet Waves NS capo. They make one out of some lightweight plastic you can find for under $10 on Amazon. I can't see any difference in performance than the metal one. I have one of each.

Just ordered a Kat-Eyz capo for my guitar (brass). Will compare to my Elliott's and report. Looked at Janet Davis first but shipping was $10.95 (unreasonable). Bought from Elderly (free ship). Will give you my impression when it arrives.

I think that you could do better pricewise with a Paige capo for about 20 USD at Janet Davises.

And it´s true, you don´t need a capo for the mandolin, unless you´re some neo...uber...mando...wizzard.

And as far as I´ve been informed by folks richer than me, the McKinney (Elliott) capo is the best around.

The photos I've seen of the Kat Eyz shows that it is thinner than the McKinney, Paige and possibly even the Shubb. I'm thinking of trying one for my guitar and would like to hear whether ourgang likes his. I'm particularly interested in knowing how brass compares to stainless steel.

I have a Shubb guitar capo. It won't sit on top of the headstock so I'm not too interested in a mando version, although I'd buy one if it changed colors like the photo.

FedX just delivered the brass Kat Eyz capo. Initially, it seems to capo well, centers and lines up parallel to the fret. Not hardly the quality finish work as the Elliott capo. About half the thickness of the Elliott. Not polished, a lot of roughness, dings, gouges on the capo, probably from some holding jig used for bending the round stock brass. Got band practice this morning so will give you a better evaluation of performance later.

Back from practice. Three hours of practice and several capo changes. The Kat Eyz capo functioned OK. I felt that it took a little more tightening to capo all the strings. It put me in mind of the Paige capo that I had, in that the radius on the clamping bar was different from the radius on the guitar fret board (2008 Martin HD-28), which meant that it had to be tightened excessively to deform the bar and bring it into contact with the board all the way across. On the plus side, the capo did not seem to pull the guitar out of tune, even with the excessive clamping pressure. When screwing the capo tight you could feel a binding of the threads. The screw itself is kinda thin and I can see it probably snapping off. The capo lined up squarley on the neck with the bar parallel to the fret and will store on the guitar neck behind the nut nicely. Very slim, about half the size of the Elliott. On a 1-10 I would rate it a 5-6. Down-grading due to poor finish work, excessive clamping force and lack of smoothness when tightening the capoing bar. I am comparing the Kat Eyz to my Elliott capo. Not a $60 capo, $30 maybe.
