    The KMS 105 by Neumann can be had for $500. if you shop carefully. I got mine through Sweetwater. The quality of sound is totally worth the price, and gain before feedback never an issue. Mine has been dropped a few times without damage. So durable, yes.
    I like it better than the KM 184 for live recording too.

    I remember the early concerts of the DGQ at the Great American Music Hall, with KM84s (in their fancy shock mounts) on everything....

    It's one of the reasons--along with the hall and the band--that those recordings are so compelling...
