Default Bach - Gavotte from French Suite V

arr for two mandolins and guitar

the mandolin parts fall easily under the fingers but the guitar part made me work a bit ! Perhaps it would be better on a mandocello, but I don't have one to try it.

Brilliant, Andy. Just had a play through all three parts on my mando (with a bit of imagination on the low guitar notes) and I really like it. Keep them coming!

That's a great choice for a mando arrangement. In some ways I prefer the French Suites to the Partitas and English Suites. They're so clean and concise. You might want to publish an arrangement with the bass line in the bass clef as well.

    Hi John Anthony

As you suggested - at the following link you will now also find a file named GavotteBass.pdf which is simply the guitar part re-scored in the bass clef. It is identical to the original guitar part except for one note - a low D - which I couldn't score for the guitar without re-tuning it !!

I hope you find it useful.

Sounds fantastic! In looking at the arrangement, I think it could be pretty easily consolidated down to two parts. The middle line is pretty much just filling out the harmony most of the time, and could be split between the guitar and mandolin without adding too much to the difficulty of either.

I look forward to it - the more versions, the better.

Like Andy's other gavotte arrangement from October 2012 (the Camidge), we added this Bach piece to our repertoire folder back then and have been playing it pretty frequently since then. It's a really nice bouncy piece, and the interaction of mandolin and guitar parts is very joyous.

Here is my home recording of Andy's arrangement.

    Mandolin 1: 1890s Umberto Ceccherini
    Mandolin 2: 1915 Luigi Embergher
    Ozark tenor guitar

Andy Boden's arrangement of this lovely Bach gavotte has been in our practice group repertoire for almost a decade now (albeit performed infrequently), so I thought it's time for a quick update recording. As with my previous 2014 recording, I'm using a tenor guitar for the bass part, as I also do with our group -- I was tempted to use the mandocello, but I would have to relearn it from what I normally play.

    Johann Sebastian Bach: GAVOTTE
From French Suite No. 5 in G major, BWV 816

Arranged for two mandolins and guitar (or mandocello) by Andy Boden:
