The fourth annual Centrum Choro workshop is now open for registration!

Our popular Choro workshop is back, and better than ever. This year we’re excited to welcome back four artist faculty plus one new person. Joining the faculty for her first visit to Centrum will be the extraordinary clarinetist/saxophonist, Anat Cohen. Anat has been tearing up the jazz world for several years now (see the cover of the September, 2012 issue of JazzTimes). People familiar with her work also know she loves to play Choro and has spent months in Brazil learning the nuances at their source.

Back on the faculty by popular demand will be Dudu Maia, mandolin; Jovino Santos Neto, accordion, piano and flute; Henrique Neto, 7-string guitar; and Alexandre Lora, pandeiro/percussion. All are master teachers and outstanding performers who will show you first hand how much fun it is to play Choro.

We're really thrilled to be able to add Anat to this workshop staff, and hope that you will forward this onto any of your friends that may be playing the instrument(s). If you haven't ever experienced Jovino Santos Neto, you have really missed something. The three time Grammy Award winner has been a true spark that has added so much to the workshop in the past two years. The younger Brazilian players have all been thrilled to play with him, as his work with Hermeto Pascoal is legendary.

Last year, we added Henrique Neto (no relation to Jovino). Henrique (pronounced Hen-rE-kE) has played with Hermeto Pascoal, and Hamilton de Holanda, Sivuca, Paolo Maura, and Paulo Sergio Santos, among others . His father is the founder of the School of Choro in Brazil, and plays mandolin himself. Henrique was a great addition and is a wonderful teacher.

Alexandre Lora is the pandeiro player in Caraviana, the band with Dudu and Alexandre's brother, Douglas Lora. Alexandre has a master in musicology and music education, has played percussion all over the world in many bands, and you may have seen his famous video of Dudu, Douglas and him playing Santa Morena on the shore of a river in Brazil, featured on Youtube for a number of years.

I also am helping Centrum put forward a scholarship again this year, in honor of my late mother and father. Last year, a young jazz pianist with no knowledge of Choro came, was blown away with choro and Jovino, and went back to college in the fall studying under Jovino at Cornish in Seattle. Would love to have that kind of outcome this year.

I believe that this is the only workshop anywhere in North America, that specializes in learning choro ensemble playing. Hope to see you in Port Townsend in April.
