Funny thing is, if this were made today, there would be a long thread from people complaining that sub-par wood had been used.
(Not to detract anything from this beautiful instrument.)

Yes isn't that interesting.....I find this type of flame to be very pleasing to the eye. It isn't "Loar" wood as such but I have seen a lot of 27, 28, 29 F4's and F5's with this type of flame on the back. I like that look.

It came that way from a fellow in Virginia. Before the days of Craig's List and Mandolin Cafe I used to surf the web and find the early classifieds that were starting to be put on the web.....found this one and when I unpacked it voila' it came in a Loar case!!!

The break in the neck was well repaired and I didn't think a thing about it. This is one of the mandolins I wish I had kept.....very deep sound with lots and lots of energy to it and a great neck to hold.

Well, unless the pics were taken at a weird angle, there is a huge bald spot in the center of the back...

It's more of the angle of the picture....I always have trouble getting the figure to really show on those backs.....
But there is an area where there is less flame but more of it is the way the sunburst was done.

Thanks............... at the time I collected these company bonuses were very good and the market was out there to buy them. It took a bunch of work to feret these out. I was like a chess player in trying to probe the different types and expressions of instruments out there. It didn't hurt to put deposits down for 2 Dudenbostels when they were below 6K......

It seems like modern builder wood selections are much more skewed toward perfection. I also really love the quirky ones, mismatched, irregular, etc from back in the day.

Gorgeous F4 Gary. If you've got a polarizing filter for your camera, you can typically get a reduced-reflection shot on those lacquer babies!

That's 100% true. People expect so much these days, even if from a tone standpoint it matters zero.
