    Default Mandolin licks

Being an ex-banjo player, I learned alot of banjo licks that were interchangeable when improvising a break. Has anyone put together a book of mandolin licks that could be used in the same way?

Joe Carr did, called it 50 Licks, so did Dawn Watson, 75 Sizzling Licks

I was trying to remember the Joe Carr product. I bought that years ago. There are several compilations available including at least one from Mel Bay. More than I thought there were.

Brad Davis has the exact product you are looking for:

    http://www.amazon.com/How-Improvise-.../dp/158496040X

Don't pay any attention the reviews. The critiques are illogical as the reviewers don't appear to understand the books intention. The book does not teach the how & why and that is on purpose. It just demonstrates some cool licks to mix and match.

Another way is to sing a lick you'd like to play, then learn it. Repeat as necessary.

Transcribing solos will also give you a lot of "licks".

Joe had some neat licks in there, one was a closed minor 9 lick, which could be used across the fingerboard. This pacakge was all handwritten tab, way cool. He also tabbed out all of his breaks on the great Slim Richey Jazz Grass record on RidgeRunner, which he sent me in the mail eons ago, have that tab package somewhere in the stack.

Niles Hokkanen has a couple books in that vein: Hot Licks for Hot Picks and Hot Solos For Bluegrass Mandolin

I've got no experience with them. His other books that I have pack a lot of good stuff into a small book with few words.

Yep, have both of the books by Niles. Great stuff in there. The 2nd one, he takes 5 or 6 common tunes and devises several hot solos for each (tab and notes), all different. Learned a lot with his books.
