    Default Winter NAMM 2013 Pictoral

As promised, pictures from a mandolinist perspective of the Winter NAMM show 2013 in Anaheim, CA. Keep in mind, the hostile acoustics of the trade show floor prevent accurate answers to questions like, "How did it sound/ How did it play?"

Sorry for the blurriness. The new Fender Mando-Strat is a contender. In my opinion, better build then the Mandobird, I think this is a fun indulgence for any mandolinist wanting to experiment in the emando world.

This was a surprise. Ovation back in the carbon fibre world with this Adamas carbon fibre top mandolin. Street price (MAP) $3499. Made in Connecticut.

    Ted Eschliman -

Thanks for the pictures. Hope there are more soon.
Question- Was GIBSON there and did they have a mandolin display ? At last Summers Gear Fest at Sweetwater Sound in Ft. Wayne, IN Gibson displayed two mandolins. When I lifted one to examine it I was told, immediately, to put it down and be careful doing so. Being uninterested in their hundreds of electric guitars, I went on my way.

I'm curious about the Eastman 404 A oval and how it differes from the 504. I see it has a cast tailpiece and a black top (which is pretty cool). Did you get a shot of the Eastman OM,if it was there?

That Collings MTO in matte brown looks very nice, too!

Oops - just started a new thread about this Ovation offering which I'd seen on your Facebook feed. Too bad the cacaphony at NAMM precluded auditioning this one. I played a standard Ovation import bowl back mando recently and was impressed. Obviously not your typical F-5 tone, but musical in its own way. I played Ovation guitars for years and loved them. I'll bet this is a nice instrument.

The new Eastman looks great. Wish they'd consider getting rid of that diamond pattern around the sound hole though. Think they could do much better, aesthetically.

I'm partial to the Collings Blonde/Honey models, but I'm curious about the new Fender's tail piece. How did it look up close?

Why is this not shaped like a mushroom cloud?

Did anyone manage to measure the scale on the Eastman octave?

Thanks for these, Ted! I was there yesterday with ToneRite but forgot my camera. My hunt for Gibson mandolins was all for nought though, as they didn't bring any. They told me that they'd "..had a flood and everything's been moved to the Custom Shop" as the reason.
I was really hoping to play a Northfield, but that was not to be, either.
There was no shortage of little clip-on tuners, though. One almost identical to the Planet Waves Mini (apparently all with the same innards).

Did you get to play any of them? I don't mean the Loars (wouldn't that have been nice?), but any of them. Even given the disclaimer in the OP, perhaps some impression could be gleaned. I'm mostly interested in the MandoStrat and its curious approach to intonation. Well, this is only the first day, so there may be opportunites awaiting, early or late in the day when things aren't so busy ...
