Maybe it's a distressed banjo in almost unplayed condition?
Just a guess...

Maybe it's distressed because no-one has cared about it enough to play it?
I would be distressed too if I was a banjo just left sitting there, in the case... all alone and unplayed.

"Distressing" (i.e., putting artificial wear and "age" on new instruments) is fairly common now. Gibson and Weber have put out "distressed" model mandolins, Fender has its "Relic" model guitars, etc. etc. Yates Banjos has a bunch of Ron Stewart (banjo player with Longview, active studio musician) model banjos, apparently this one was "distressed" to make it look like Stewart has played it since 1955 or some such, then the owner decided to sell it relatively unplayed.
I have a basement full of "distressed" instruments, but I did it myself by dragging them around to gigs and beating on them. Did I mention leaving them in hot cars, cold cars, airplane cargo bays, out in the rain, yada yada? Playing them with fingerless gloves on, at outdoor union rallies in February? So they're "distressed in almost abused condition." And, not for sale -- not yet...

From Almeria - "I would be distressed too if I was a banjo just left sitting there, in the case... all alone and unplayed.". I've got one of those. Blame it on the mandolin. I've got to get back on the horse today though,i have a young guy coming down so i can show him a few points on banjo playing. I just hope i get the thing the right way around - the strings go to the front right, with the round bit at the bottom ?,

My Silverangel is also distressed - but I do use it for alternate tunings quite often, so really, it has no reason to complain. It's just very sensitive.

Distressing, as a factory option, it might make people think you have more playing experience
than you actually have ..
