Thread: A question about finger planting.

Default A question about finger planting.

So I'm somewhat new to the mandolin, though not to music, and have noticed a general division between those who prefer pick guards and those who do not. This good natured debate, however, brought up another topic I see on here quite frequently. I often read advise that suggests planting the pinky on the instrument while picking is bad, (though many members admit to doing this anyway, as well as some really good players on youtube).

This makes me beg the question, why is it a bad idea to plant? I ask because I see a lot of great players do it with no problems, despite many advocates against the notion. I myself have never had the need to anchor, it feels unnatural for me, but I'm curious.

I searched the forums via the search feature, but was mostly led to pick guard discussions and general advise regarding this, but never why.

Keep in mind I'm new to the mandolin, and I ask this with good intentions

I used to plant fingers very spring on the farm and had no luck at all in getting a harvest. They won't grow this far north I guess.

I think the trick is to plant them in the moonlight, no worries though, it's a common mistake
