Thread: Strange Carbon Fiber / Spruce Frankenmando

Default Strange Carbon Fiber / Spruce Frankenmando

Found this on ebay when I was procrastinating....

Strange, huh? If I had to guess, I'd say it's a NewMAD mandolin that might have been a blem, or never got finished. Anyone here know more about this?

If there are more of those bodies out there, un-"finished", I want one!

NewMAD mandos have a CF top, not spruce.

Indeed they do. But the neck and back are clearly of NewMAD origin... a prototype someone found while dumpster-diving? Production sample? One that got driven over and needed a new top?
I am too lazy to email the seller and ask. I guess that's why I'd make a lousy investigative journalist.

Maybe it was dug out of a landfill in Montana where it was deposited after being involved in a train wreck...

BIN $1,125 , You could actually buy a real mandolin for that kind of money...

definitely something for Peter Mix to clear up, but judging by the buffing on the sides near the top joint, it looks to me like a previous owner thought he'd experiment, chop off the cf original top and add on the spruce.

Yes, definitely a New-Mad instrument originally. 'Unfinished' carbon fibre might mean it has not had all the treatments required to make it stable. That and the hideously ugly marriage of wooden top to body make it less of a novelty than a potential disaster in the making.

I thought the same, but it's an illusion created by a dark strap that tricks the eye into thinking the scroll goes the wrong way. Click on the image for a bigger view and it becomes clearer.

I had a car I wanted to get rid of so I put a "Free" sign on it. No takers. My next strategy was to put a "For Sale ---$500" sign on it and someone snapped it up the same day! The logic still evades me but I do understand!
