    Default Michigan and Mandolins

OK, i'm kind of intrigued about this. Arguably, the modern mandolin started here with Gibson, we've got one of the country's acoustic meccas in lansing, Northfield Mandolins is here, at least one luthier here has ties to Michigan (is Grady still making instruments?), but it is very hard to find a mando teacher here, at least in the Detroit area. i'm busy looking until I get a new job (degrees in journalism and anthropology don't get ya much here), but want to get going as soon as I get an income

Michigan also has Mike Kemnitzer (Nugget).

I worked in Dearborn for a number of years and I drove over to Elderly for lessons. It was a long drive but it provided a great excuse to go to Elderly.

Hi rb3868, I live, perform, and teach mandolin in Michigan. I am up in Traverse City which is quite a ways from the Metro Detroit area but a fun place to spend a weekend. I am in your area from time to time and may be able to schedule a lesson when in the area. I was in Ann Arbor last Tuesday and Rochester on Wednesday playing gigs. I will be giving workshops at Elderly in Lansing on April 6 and 27. I also teach via skype. While Michigan is a good place for a mandolin player to be, the Detroit area is so steeped in Rock n-Roll that mandolins are seen as an oddity. Don't get discouraged!

Ah, but there is some great rock and roll mandolin out there!

    Have you been to Wheatland?

My wife and I made it to that gig, and it was a good one. Bluegrass mandolin and guitar in an upscale Mexican restaurant in Rochester. Don't get much better!
All my life I wanted to be somebody, now I realize I should have been more specific.

Welcome Robert. Let me extend an invitation to you and rb3868 to join our Michigan social group. Oh, and you too Don. That group would be a good forum for this kind of discussion.
