Recently there was a thread started by a person who had a big collection of high end instruments including guitars and along with that most of these each had their own Calton cases. Very impressive for sure. I have a feeling that his Calton collection was worth more than many people’s instrument collections.

They’re listed in the classifieds here as well:

    https://www.mandolincafe.com/ads/202316#202316

They are NOS of an item no longer being made from a labor of love by the late Bill Collings. They are a luxury item and not required to make beautiful music, much like Waverly tuners, James tailpieces, Blue Chip picks, and so many other accessories we fetishize in these parts. But they likewise are a great expression of their design and have many fans, including our site owner (and me).

Well, the re-finished red plain A [misidentified as an A-2] that was being offered on reverb for 10K, later reduced to $8500, has been reduced again to $4250. Maybe after another 2 years with no sale, they'll knock another thousand off it, then wait another 2 years before they list it for $1000 and maybe get a couple of offers.

    Or maybe pigs will fly.

Or maybe some poor soul who doesn't know anything about mandolins will read their attempt at a slick description and buy it for their mate or other family member for a gift. I hope not.

Anyway, the market value of a refinished plain A might be $750 +/-.

And why on earth I wasted the time to type out that link, I'll never know.

Strange the store is asking that much. (FWIW, it's an A Jr. priced at $4k). Doesn't appear other items from them are overpriced. But, yes, that is very wishful thinking.

Unusual in that it has the older style tuners. Not something I'd expect. Everything looks stock though.

A 3 piece soundboard of very wide grain? Makes me think this was one of the cheaper models. If it's as old as it looks it might still have a great sound though.
In my experience grain that wide is better used on instruments that will use the additional bass response, not mandolins.

I submit this combination guitar/mandolin double necked monstrosity (which they couldn't even be bothered to give matching finishes). Only $1700.

I do think that those coconut husk pickguards will probably catch on though... that's pretty sweet.

Just think of the beautiful music you can create. Also, shipping is quite reasonable at $25.

If it DOES sell, I'm going to go full time into the business of building them... a couple of $100-150 instruments and a few hours of labor with a sawzall, dremel and bottle of glue. Seems like "unique instruments" might just be a big money maker.

Or maybe I'll just stick to the pickguards...

Well, maybe if whoever did this used better instruments from the get-go, the pricing might make sense. I don't know what make the mandolin is, but Kona is not a top-of-the-line brand, for guitars and anything else. AFAIK, natch. YMMV.

Maybe, I don't spend as much time on this thread as I do elsewhere on the forum... i just saw it and was really confused, and wanted to share.

I'd say, impossible. But I'd say slapping together something from half a sheet of plywood and odd bits of foam would be easy enough and also about all it deserves.

I think that was an electric double-doohickey. But I forget if my memory is as good as it used to be.

This J Bovier was listed for $2850.00! It's been lowered to $1650.00. I guess the distressing added value?

I guess honorable mention should go to https://gregboyd.com/product/c-2009-...on-festival-f/ for this Epiphone Flatiron posted at $3195.00. I believe these sold new for $799.00.

Good question. I suppose one could try a few different ways until the most optimal approach is discovered. If anyone wants to know, one could ask the seller - seems to also be the maker. It's not unheard of for a builder to overvalue his/her work. But if you're really interested, follow the link to his eBay store. He has another one of these being offered for less than half this. He is deeply into bling.
