    Default Evan Marshall Fans.

I love this guy. What is he doing? I'm on his FB and visit his website and youtube page occasionally. The first time I remember hearing him was on youtube and he was performing the William Tell Overture for a fundraiser with all these quotes from famous musicians giving high praise. Yet rarely do I see a thread talking about this man who has successfully made a career in both classical and bluegrass genres as well as becoming a mentor to numerous students; Scott Gates being one of the more well known.

It would be nice to hear from him (if he exists here at the MC) or from others that might know. Are there any Evan Marshall fans here?

I saw him a number of times at the Mandolin Symposium...great player, and very entertaining!

I think that Evan is right up there with all the other greats, and maybe even in his own league with his dual technique. Thats right, pick a name and this man is shoulder to shoulder with them IMO. Scott Gates is a shredder as well and is from my lil town up in the high desert. My friend/luthier was his mandolin teacher when he was a kid until he met Evan and passed the torch.

With Chris Thile launching his new album, which I bought, reminded me that there is Evan Marshall who has been doing this on a high level for years. I guess he is a unique mix of skills, talent and personality just like everyone else.

He's a great player.....classical on an F-style (a hot topic due to the upcoming Thile release).......you're right......he doesn't seem to get the "attention" he deserves. Nice Gilchrist....no fret dots at all....true to the classical guitar design style.

I had his first album back in the days of vinyl- I think Mark O'Connor ( i think he played piccolo mandolin on one track) produced it for Rounder? maybe

very impressive playing - classical -with some duo style Americana

his sound seems (to me) to be similar to Zenkl - Evan being a bit more sophisticated

so while his playing is phenomenal - the music never "grabbed me" like Dawg , Mike M, Thile , Ostroushko, or the Blakes

I used to go to the Ice House in Pasadena, CA back in seventies and hear Evan play with his band Smokewood. You should hear him play fiddle.

In a lot of ways I think of EM as the anti-Thiele. They are very alike, yet different in crucial ways. Evan has the most rock solid stability on the mandolin of anyone I have seen. Thiele is often flopping all over the place.

JonZ, Evan is alive and well. He continues to perform and teach. He did a concert at my home a year or so ago while he was on a concert tour. The music biz is a tough one. Evan is obviously in the same league as the "stars" but gets little attention. He is an outstanding teacher and nice guy to boot.

I love Evan Marshall. I learned about him from his Mandolin Magic album. He's such an unassuming personality. He's the kind of guy you could walk past in a mall and never notice, but then he pulls out a mandolin and your jaw drops. I just love that combination.

I've meet Evan a number of times. He is as good as anyone except in self promotion.

Yep, you have to promote yourself. My friend would smirk and laugh when people did that and called it 'reading your own press" but if you're not going to, who will? I'm not under the impression that my thread will mean much but I did want to bring attention his way. I think he's awesome.

I totally agree Greg - Evan Marshall is a master of the mandolin in every aspect of his playing. He makes it look easy, but i can't even 'imagine' doing some of the stuff that he does, let alone actually do it. Definitely slightly 'off the planet',
