Kenny Snow's Gilchrist F5 Loar Copy.
I've known Kenny for 5 or 6 years but never knew he once owned a Loar that he sold to David Grisman. That was definitely the one that got away. Then I find out Kenny had a Gilchrist F5 Loar copy a few years back (1979) and sold it and David ended up with that one to... OMG..Kenny..You gotta start hanging on to those, buddy.
Ever since I've known KS he has played an Ellis and always a great one. Last night I see him holding a The Gibson. Of course I said "What's that you got there?" He hands me this beast of a mando and I played it for a song during the jam. I've never played anything like that before. From the first note it jumped out at me and rang so pure I was mesmerized. Even playing it soft it barked and woofed. The fret board and action was so low and played like butter. Honestly, I have no idea how it did that.
It was the Gilchrist Loar copy. Kenny said he just bought it back from Dave and was so excited to be reunited again. Man, I'm so impressed with that mando and that's an understatement. Now that I see what is out there and what is possible I know my MAS will never die down until I own that level of craftsmanship.
Thanks, Kenny. It was a pleasure.
