What a nice guy.
Bakke told investigators he met with the victim in June to catch a bat living in her house and said he “felt sorry” for her when he learned she was legally blind and living alone in a dwelling in need of repair, reports stated.
He was helping her clean out her closets.

The bad news is that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. The good news is that what kills us makes it no longer our problem
Doesn't it just restore your belief in humanity?
Ah man, that's less than an hour away from my folks house!

"He felt sorry for her" so he stole her mandolin?...nice guy. She probably noticed it was stolen when she got the urge to run thru some Bach riffs after listening to Thiles' latest cd, went to the closet and it was gone.
What a truly splendid example of just how low some people can sink...

I have no doubts that this fine citizen was going to sell the Loar & give all proceeds to the woman!! What a nice guy.....

Wait a minute, he stole it? I've always thought that was illegal!
This is a newly discovered serial number. I saw detailed pictures of it yesterday and I've since found out the serial is known by more people than myself but at this point hasn't been made public. I'll let someone else reveal that as I was told this wasn't for public consumption but now with this article, that's what its become. Interestingly, the serial falls right between two documented ones in the Mandolin Archive/Darryl's records.
Though the initial situation is rather pathetic there does appear a bright ray of sunshine with the discovery of a new previously undocumented Loar. Also the owner will have the option of capitalizing on it's value.

I'm so glad she "noticed" it in time to rectify the situation. I hope the guy gets some serious prison time of of it.

Due to current budgetary restrictions the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off -- sorry about the inconvenience.
I expect the sudden "taking responsibility" angle the story seems to give the theif has to do with the value of the Loar being discovered.
Grand Larceny = more time in the pokey
Not here, my friend. There are so many people in the pokey, and so much need to find places for all the drug prosecution defendants, that the theft of a few thousand dollars will probably net him probation. I once had a judge here tell me (when I was a prosecutor) that it was ridiculous to ask for significant jail time for a man who stole retirement savings from widows and orphans. It takes your breath away.

What about my Grandma?
This bad guy was also an idiot. She's blind right,so she'll never "notice"! Blind people know where EVERYTHING is in their homes, and probably don't have much in the way of things that they don't use, much more so than probably any of us that can see. It never occurred to this guy that maybe being blind she may play music! Can't really fault him though, after all he's a "Bat Hunter" by profession.
If this would have happened on Wall Street no charges would have been filed.
John A. Karsemeyer
Because the guy "confessed" he will probably not get any jail time...a fine and probation for a few years at best. Lucky he didn't just sell it on Craigslist for a few hundred dollars. Wouldn't be surprised at all if the lady plays mandolin. Is it still going to be auctioned?

Humanity as a whole ain't bad, there's just too many scumbags around for my liking. This guy should be publically pilloried.
The dope probably would have gotten away with it if he had simply offered her a few hundren dollars for it.

I would love to hear from the blind woman on her description of the Loar. She obviously had it out in a place that she checked regularly. I can think of few things shaped as lovely as a Loar that I'd love to study with my hands. The curves, points and scrolls must have been like physical poetry to her. I'm sure she valued it at more than any normal old knick-knack. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have her examine other makes of mandolins with her hands and have her thoughts on how they compared to her beloved Loar?
