    If I am reading the problem correctly you need to loosen the strings and put a strip of cloth or felt between the lip and the strings and re tune.

    If that thing on the leading edge of the tailpiece is a dampening device or the location of a dampening device; Yes that will help some. Or it might be on top of the strings and under the tailpiece cover, if any. It will quiet any rattles or unwanted vibrations on or in the tailpiece mechanism. There may be other points of rattle in the tailpiece which can be dampened the same way. I use felt as a dampener but lots of things can be used: cloth, leather, thin rubber, etc.
