Thread: Guitar and Mandolin Duos

  1. #1

    Default Guitar and Mandolin Duos

I've been really digging the guitar and mandolin combination lately. In particular Doc Watson and Bill Monroe's Live Recordings album, Doc & Dawg, and Chris Thile and Michael Davies' Sleep With One Eye Open have gotten a lot of play time.

What are some of your favorite guitar and mando songs or albums?

To name a few, Monroe Brothers, Blue Sky Boys, Red Rector and Norman Blake, and Skaggs and Rice.

Listen to any of the mando/guitar duets on Adam Steffey's 'New Primitive". Zeb Snyder (I believe), the guitarist is 17 yrs old, and just amazing. They really do tear it up together!

The Monroe Brothers wrote the book; Charlie invented Bluegrass guitar before it had a name and Bill did the same for mandolin.

None of the duos beat Skaggs and Rice. They are just ridiculous and there is a ton of stuff on there to play along with and learn.

The Northside Southpaws (out of Chicago) tear it up on resonator instruments. No bluegrass content, mostly old blues and rags.

That Skaggs & Rice stuff is pure classic. I just cannot imagine how it could be done better.

Marijke & Michiel Wiesenekker would be high on my list.
The breadth and quality of their repertoire is what gives them the edge for me.
It probably does them no commercial favours being so adept in so many styles, but I'm glad they are.

While I agree with all the above (especially Skaggs & Rice, The Blue Sky Boys & Northside Allstars) I'd like to add Lloyd and Floyd, the Armstrong Twins.

These two aren't a permanent group or anything, but I really like the guitar/mandolin duets with harmony vocals done by Ben Hodges and Jenn Miori. The first song they do here ("One Morning in May") is wonderful.

Yes the Kitchen tapes are one of my favorites along with Skaggs and Rice, Doc and Dawg, Tone Poems 1+2, Johnny Stats and Robert Shafer are pretty good too, just a little too much "modern" speed pickin though but still tasty, Monroe Brothers, I'm sure there are some more I listen to, but these are the ones that stick in my mind right now anyway.

Is there a CD out there of Red Rector and Norman Blake or is that on an old record?, I've never heard that and would love to own a copy. Red Rector did some stuff with Don Reno I have somewhere and anything Reno is my favorite, Don was a fabulous musician and my favorite banjo style that not too many people play nowadays. Don't forget Blake and Rice. Two albums of great stuff that includes a lot of mando-guitar.

Grateful Dawg. Garcia and Grisman. My favorite album is their Shady Grove. Skaggs and Rice are a close second.
