    Default Summit F200S

    Hi all

A few days ago I had the pleasure of spending some time at The Acoustic Music Company in Brighton. The objective was to buy myself a high quality F5 mandolin. I tried a Krishot F5, a Krishot F5 The Garnet Vine, a Weber Black Ice F5 and a Summit F100. However, after much playing and swapping about I went for a Summit F200S. I am absolutely delighted with it.

I must record what a pleasure it is to deal with Trevor Moyle. In the end, it boiled down to choosing between the two Summits. The F200 had new strings, whereas the F100's were sounding slightly dead. Trevor immediately replaced the strings to allow a fair A/B comparison. The F200 was considerably more expensive, but to my ears and eyes it was worth it.

You have a beautiful instrument. The Summit mandolins are really excellent. So,that's 2 that i know of up in Scotland. Fellow member Gerry Hastie up in Kirkcaldy owns one that he's very, very pleased with.Trevor is indeed a great bloke to deal with & fully deserves the praise that he gets on here,
    Ivan
    Weber F-5 'Fern'.
    Lebeda F-5 "Special".
    Stelling Bellflower BANJO
    Tokai - 'Tele-alike'.
    Ellis DeLuxe "A" style.

I used to own a Summit F100S (SN56- 1995) and now own a Krishot F5 (0265, 2002). There were at least 3 mandolins and many years between them, so I never A/B'ed them.

Can you discuss the Summit vs Krishot a little bit?

I've often wondered where my Summit ended up.... .

I had a Summit F200 custom with bound F-holes made for me and bought through Trevor and I really regret selling it to a guy in Glasgow. It was a great mandolin but in a moment of madness I swapped it for a Santa Cruz guitar.

The more I played the Summit the louder it got. I don't think you can go wrong as Paul Schneider has built so many that he knows exactly what he's doing.

In terms of sound, they were quite similar and equally excellent. Build quality, again, both top notch. The difference for me was the width of the neck, with the Krishot noticeably narrower. I'm sure I could have got used to it in time but I have quite big hands and I found myself cramping up a bit. I mentioned this to Trevor who immediately agreed, and explained it was really built for bluegrass, which I understand. I play almost exclusively Scottish and Irish tunes so for me the wider neck of the Summit is easier. It also proved to me that F holes are great for my style, and ovals are not a prerequisite.

It's nice to hear all the nice comments about the Summit mandolins. There is a Summit F100 in the classifieds (for under 2K) that I inquired about in another thread but did not get a response.

And as a final note...I noticed TAMCO now has another F200 in stock, in case anyone is tempted. I'm loving mine!

I used to own a Summit F-100 and traveled and played with it quite a bit. I really don't prefer the "X" braced sound but I know many folks do. Either way the Summit's are good solid little mandos....enjoy!

I just purchased a Summit Custom Mandolin made in 2012 #400 which is between the 200 and the Artist style. Really Awesome mandolins for the money.
